news headlines with a bias to Spain’s tourism,
property and economic position.
Less Tourists, but more spend!
Data shows that in January Spain received fewer visitors from the UK and Germany. Overall, Spain
welcomed 4.14 million foreign visitors, 1.4% fewer than January 2019. In the month leading up to
the official departure of the UK from the EU it would be easy to attribute the drop entirely to Brexit,
as there were 11% less British visitors, however the UK still accounted for 17.4% of the total visitor
numbers. German visitors were down by 4.6% and Scandinavians by 9.6%. Conversely, visitors
from the Americas (excluding USA) increased by over 20% and France by 7.7%. The most eye-
catching figure was the fall of 26.8% visitors to the Balearics, doubtless influenced to a large degree
by the trend in the German and British markets, while there were positive rises of between 4 and 6%
in Andalucia, Valenciana and Madrid. In terms of spend, a rise of 2.1% is recorded in the amount
of money visitors spent in Spain in January, reaching 4,779 million euros, making the average daily
spend by the British alone 7.6% higher than a year previously at 121 euros per person.
