World Tapa Day
Living in Spain has many advantages
and in 2016 the Spanish created World
Tapas Day, who needs an excuse – it’s
daily around here! However, June was
designated the main month and local
bars participated. Ruta de Tapas is what
you’ll recognise more so in our area and it’s
well worth doing. Allegedly, 46.5 percent of
Spaniards say Tapa it is their favourite food, tortilla is the
number one choice, followed by patatas bravas,
jamón serrano, croquettes and Russian salad
– we think all of those plus gambas pil pil,
manchego cheese, chorizo, calamari and
olives are surely up there on the list for all
Tapa fans.
It’s come a long way - the word ‘tapas’
comes from the Spanish word ‘tapar’,
which is a verb meaning ‘to cover’. The
actual action of serving up small dishes was
popularized before the 19th century when travellers
visiting inns would often be served up small samples of food
available. It’s also said that the original purpose of a Tapar was to keep flies from going into your
drink…
Some bars keep it simple and traditional, whilst others have invented some stunning delicacies
paired with fine wines…. A Spanish bar crawl never tasted so good.
Small portions work well allowing a perfect way to sample popular Spanish cuisine with plenty of
options for different tastes, our favourite fly deterrent!
